What is a Crypto-Christian?

प्रवक्ता · English edition 18 October 2026 · Hindi original 24 October 2017 · 7 min read

In Greek, the word 'crypto' means hidden or secret. Crypto-Christian* means secret-Christian. The important thing here is that Crypto-Christian is not an insult or a negative term. Crypto-Christianity is an institutional practice of Christianity. Under the core principle of Crypto-Christianity, Christians living in a country outwardly worship the God of that country and follow its religion as a camouflage; but in reality, they are Christians inside and continuously propagate Christianity.

The earliest example of a Crypto-Christian is found in the Roman Empire when Christianity initially set foot in Rome. The then great Roman Emperor Trajan considered Christianity a threat to Roman culture and put forth a proposal before all Romans who had converted to Christianity: either abandon Christianity or face the death penalty. To escape the death penalty, the Roman Christians pretended to abandon Christianity, and thereafter, outwardly continued to worship Roman gods and goddesses, while inwardly adhering to Christianity. Just as when Muslims are 5-10 percent, they abide by the law of that country. But when they reach 20-30 percent, the demand for Sharia begins, and riots occur. As the population increases further, the Ethnic Cleansing of non-Muslims begins.

However, Crypto-Christians do not engage in violence like Muslims. When Crypto-Christians are less than 1 percent, they adopt the God of that country and continue their work, and when they become greater in number, they start insulting those very gods and goddesses. Every Hindu should watch Hollywood's famous movie Agora (2009)**. It shows that when Crypto-Christians grew in numbers in Rome, they began insulting Roman gods and goddesses. At present in India too, as Crypto-Christians have begun gaining a foothold, the work of abusing Hindu gods, goddesses, and Brahmins (priestly class) has started here as well. Meaning, what happened in Europe 2000 years ago is happening in India today. Recently, Professor Kedar Mandal calling Goddess Durga a prostitute reminds one of second-century Rome.

There are many examples of Crypto-Christians, but the most interesting example is from Japan. The so-called Saint Xavier of the missionaries, who had come to India, went to Japan in 1550 for proselytization and converted many Buddhists to Christianity. In 1643, Japan's nationalist ruler, the Shogun, considered the propagation of Christianity a threat to Japan's social unity. The Shogun used force, and many churches were demolished. Statues of Jesus and Mary were confiscated and destroyed. Many Christian books, including the Bible, were publicly burnt. All Japanese who had adopted Christianity were persecuted. They were forcibly subjected to ghar wapsi (reconversion) into Buddhism. Those who refused were beheaded. Many Christians pretended to undergo ghar wapsi into Buddhism and remained Crypto-Christians. In Japan, these Crypto-Christians were called "Kakure-Christians***".

Out of fear of the Buddhists, Kakure-Christians stopped keeping any books related to Christianity. To worship Jesus and Mary, they composed prayers that sounded like Buddhist mantras but contained biblical words. Kakure-Christians began transferring these Christian prayers orally from one generation to the next. From 1550 for the next 400 years, Kakure-Christians remained under the camouflage of Buddhism. In the 20th century, when Japan moved toward industrialization and Buddhist religious fundamentalism waned, these Kakure-Christians emerged from behind the mask of Buddhism and revealed their Christian identity.

Examples of Crypto-Christians are not found only in the Roman Empire and Japan; Crypto-Christians are abundant in the Balkans, Asia Minor, the Middle East, Soviet Russia, China, Nazi Germany, as well as India. Just as the Crypto-Christians of Japan are called Kakure, those in the countries of Asia Minor are called Dvoverstvo in Serbia, Patsaloi in Cyprus, Laramnoi in Albania, Crypto-Maronites in Lebanon, and Crypto-Copts in Egypt.

In India, there are many such Kakure-Christians who exist among us wearing the mask of secularism, leftism, and Buddhism. The official Christian population in India is 20 million, and it would be no surprise if 100 million Christians emerge in India. In Punjab alone, the estimated Christian population is above 10 percent. Many Christians in Punjab are under the camouflage of Sikhism; they wear turbans, maintain beards, carry the kirpan (ceremonial dagger), and wear the kada (steel bracelet), outwardly following Sikhism, but all of these are secret-Christians.

Many Crypto-Christians keep Hindu names to claim reservation benefits. Among them, many have names after deities such as Ram, Krishna, Shiva, Durga, etc., whom even Sangh members would not suspect as non-Hindus even in their dreams, such as former President K. R. Narayanan—who enjoyed benefits as a Dalit throughout his life, but upon his death, seeing the burial procedure according to Christian rites made it clear that he was a Crypto-Christian. There are many such Crypto-Christians in the country who, under Hindu names, attack Hinduism only to further the Vatican's agenda.

We see Crypto-Christians every single day in daily life, but are unable to recognize them because they remain hidden under the camouflage of Hindu names. Such as--

  • Congress leader Ambika Soni, who called Shri Ram imaginary, is a Crypto-Christian.
  • Most of the staff at NDTV are Crypto-Christians.
  • Naxalites with Hindu names who killed Swami Laxmanananda are Crypto-Christians.
  • Gauri Lankesh, who had put a graphic on her Facebook profile depicting Brahmins being driven out of Kerala, was a Crypto-Christian.
  • The Leftists shouting slogans in JNU to fragment India and then calling the Indian government's action against them Brahminical tyranny are not Leftists, but Crypto-Christians.
  • Khalistani Sikhs on Facebook who abuse Brahmins, calling Hanuman a monkey and Ganesha an elephant, are Crypto-Christians.
  • Those in Tamil Nadu attacking North Indians hiding behind Dravidian identity are Crypto-Christians.
  • Those opposing Hindi in Bengal, the state that gave the most Hindi singers, are Crypto-Christians.
  • Narendra Dabholkar, who ran agendas against Hindu festivals in the name of anti-superstition while not labeling the slaughter of innocent animals on Bakrid or a dead man coming alive as Jesus on Easter as superstition, was a Crypto-Christian.
  • Kedar Mandal, who called Goddess Durga a prostitute, and Dilip C Mandal and Vaman Meshram, who speak against Brahmins day and night on Facebook, are Crypto-Christians.
  • Many hiding behind the surname Yadav like Jitendra Yadav and Sunil Janardan Yadav, who claim Mahishasura as their ancestor, are Crypto-Christians.
  • Tamil actor Vijay is a Crypto-Christian; his full name is Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar.
  • Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashish Khetan is a Crypto-Christian. His wife's name is Christina Lydia Fernandes, and both children are Christian.

When someone has a liver problem, their skin itches, they feel nausea, and their eyes turn yellow, but these are all merely symptoms; treating them will not solve the underlying problem. If the liver problem is resolved, these symptoms will disappear on their own. Viewed without analysis, all kinds of problems will appear for Hindus—Leftists, Congress, Khalistanis, Naxalites, the Dalit movement, JNU, etc.—but all these problems are mere symptoms, the root cause of which is Crypto-Christianity.

-- Shri Sanjay Mishra, author and Hindu rights activist, works against the propaganda of Dalits/Khalistanis and other Crypto-Christians.

Are the DNA of Hindus and Muslims the same?

While reading the novel "Doosri Jannat" written by Nasira Sharma, born in DNA Allahabad, I suddenly remembered Allama Iqbal, who in his "Jawab-e-Shikwa" restlessly and immersed in grief says to his co-religionists: "वज़ह में तुम हो नसारा तो तमद्दुन में हनूद/ ये मुसलमां हैं जिन्हें देख के शर्माये" (The Christians are [ahead] in reason, and the Hindus in culture; these are Muslims, seeing whom [even Islam] is ashamed.)
