The recent incident of the Constitution Bench of Supreme Court asking if there is any descendant of Bhagwan Rama still living and the response of the Hindu community to this query is a glaring example of our ignorance about our own tradition. The Jaipur Royal family produced certain documents to show that they trace their lineage to Kush but such attempts merely defeat our purpose.
The religiously and culturally illiterate judges of the Supreme Court who can’t grow beyond the iron cage of historicism which is the hallmark of Abrahamic theology by putting a strong emphasis on certain historical events in a geographical area, can’t either fathom the fact that the criterion doesn’t apply to Sanatan Dharma. Bhagwan Rama was a Suryavanshi Kshatriya but the more important fact is that he is the avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu and not a mere mortal being who can be tied to any particular period despite the recent attempts to do so. The tradition sees Bhagwan Rama as beyond the conception of temporal and spatial realities and ever existing. When it’s argued that a deity lives in a particular temple, it doesn’t mean that the deity once lived there but the fact that once pran pratishtha of any deity is done in a temple, the temple becomes the abode of the particular deity.
Another issue is that Supreme Court isn’t hearing a case of whether the historicity of Bhagwan Rama is authentic or not like the claim of the Hindu community is not predicated on this issue but the historical fact that there existed a temple before which was destroyed by Islamic invaders following the iconoclastic doctrine of Islam. If the Supreme Court believes that the existence of Bhagwan Rama is the necessary condition to determine the claim of Hindus, probably they should also determine how many mosques are the homes of Allah.
Bhagwan Rama is the very essence and soul of Hindu civilization. Each Hindu is a descendant of Bhagwan Rama and our personal and collective memory is resplendent with the tales of him irrespective of whether it comes from Valmiki Ramayan, Ramcharitmanas or Kamban Ramayan. Can any historical fact triumph over our bhakti for him? Which fact is more relevant than millions of Hindus worshipping and considering him as the very embodiment of Dharma in all the spheres? Do we need the archeological and textual records to ascertain our faith in Rama? If the answer to these questions is an unequivocal no then we don’t need to give any proof of any particular family being the descendant of Bhagwan Rama.
