Dharma & CultureEarning Money versus Providing for a Family
Virag Dhulia · English edition 23 October 2026 · Hindi original 28 November 2017 · 2 min read
Feminists contend that since women have now become capable of earning money, they must no longer be considered inferior to men—and this is their definition of Gender Equality.
Yet they are either oblivious to certain realities or deliberately choose to ignore them. First and foremost, merely earning money and earning money to sustain a family—there is a world of difference between the two.
When your focus is solely on earning money, you do just that: you do some work, earn a bit of money, and squander it on lipstick and cosmetics. But when you earn to sustain a family, you shoulder the weight of every wish and aspiration of all its members.
You do not merely arrange for their food and shelter; you fulfill their every need. Not only that—to achieve this monumental task, you often take up work that is not to your liking, merely because it pays enough to meet your family's needs alongside your own.
At the workplace, you often swallow bitter insults in silence, because the job—and the income it yields—is indispensable. You must also ensure that should any misfortune strike tomorrow and that income stop, the household can still keep running for a time until another source of livelihood is arranged.
In short, you strangle your own personal existence, your ambitions, and your desires, sacrificing yourself for the sustenance of a family comprising your elderly parents, wife, and children—and you keep doing this work relentlessly, generation after generation. No matter the hardships at the workplace, you cannot simply walk away, for you bear the responsibility of sustaining an entire family, not merely earning money for yourself.
And far from receiving any credit for doing all this, you are taunted: "What novel feat have you accomplished? Everyone does this, and does it far better than you; this is merely your duty."
Now consider history, and answer in the comments: since time immemorial, who has been sustaining the family, who has been making these sacrifices? Woman, or man?

Shri Ram Eating the Tasted Ber of the Bhilni Shabari Is Proved from the Valmiki Ramayana
Nowadays, some hyper-scholars are propagating the delusion in society that the tale of Shabari’s "tasted ber (jujube fruits)" is not in the Ramayana, and that Shabari was not a low-caste devotee but an upper-varna (class/caste) woman. This is not only contrary to the supreme import of the shastra (sacred text), but also extremely harmful to social samarasya (harmony) and is a manifestation of ego and malice.
