JyotishCan an Astrologer Cast a Birth Chart for a Child Born on the Moon?

A common curiosity has arisen among people: if a child were born on the Moon, how would their kundali be cast, and how would their future be foretold? Extending the scope of this question, one might also ask what would happen if a child were born on Mars or any other planet?
The simple answer is that, based on the astrological knowledge we possess, neither can a kundali be cast nor can the future be foretold for a child born anywhere outside Earth—whether on the Moon, Mars, or Mercury. The knowledge of jyotisha developed by our rishi-munis was meant exclusively for beings born on Earth. That is why, in our tradition, a kundali is also matched or cast only for those who were born on this earth. In our shastras, whichever avatar of Vishnu is described, a kundali is available only for those who took human form and were born on this earth. As for casting a kundali for a child born on the Moon or any other planet, it is not possible, at least based on the jyotisha shastra available to us. There are many reasons for this, but a few points are essential to understand.
Our solar system is made up of the Sun, planets, satellites, comets, minor planets (asteroids), and so on. In this system, the Sun is a star around which the remaining members of the solar system revolve. The total number of planets is nine: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (there is a separate belief regarding Pluto's status as a planet, but that is not our topic today). However, when we speak of jyotisha, we must adopt a gross definition of planets, because among the nine grahas recognized by astrology, the Sun and the Moon are not planets, and despite being a planet, the Earth is excluded from the astrologer's category of grahas. The Sun is a star, while the Moon is merely a satellite of the Earth. Interestingly, Rahu and Ketu, which hold a place among the grahas, have no physical existence at all; rather, they are two opposing nodal points located on the ecliptic plane where the Moon crosses the ecliptic plane.

Now, suppose a child is born on the Moon. Under that circumstance, can an astrologer cast their kundali? And if not, why?
- If a child were born on the Moon, in that state the Moon would have to be removed from the category of grahas, and the Earth would have to be included in its place.
- If the Moon were removed from the category of grahas, astrology would face the problem of deciding which planet should be assigned lordship over the rashi Karka (Cancer), since the Earth cannot take that place. Now, since the Earth cannot assume ownership of Karka on the basis of its qualities, which sign will the Earth then be given ownership of?
- This means that some other satellites would once again need to be included in the category of grahas, and the allocation of rashis and their lords would have to be reassigned. Consequently, after that, the directions and natures of the rashis, their lordship over bodily limbs, all astrological yogas, sadesati, daiyya, and the concept of gochar would all become meaningless.
- A similar crisis would arise regarding the nakshatras, because in astrology nakshatras are directly related to the Moon's celestial journey, and furthermore, among the 27 nakshatras, at least three are under the ownership of the Moon.
- The Moon's position determines a person's birth rashi and birth nakshatra. If the Moon itself were removed from the category of grahas, a crisis of determining a person's birth rashi and birth nakshatra would arise.
- A problem would also arise concerning Rahu and Ketu, because they are after all the nodal points of the Moon itself.
- If the birth nakshatra is not clear, determining the Vimshottari dasha would also become impossible.
- After removing the Moon from the category of grahas and including the Earth or some other satellite as a graha, the formulas or principles concerning the determination of uchcha, nicha, or mula-trikona rashis of planets, planetary friendships, planetary aspects, and graha-bala—all of these will fail, and the very concept of a Chandra-kundali (moon chart) will also come to an end.
All of this means that based on the knowledge, formulas, and principles of astrology that we possess, neither can a kundali be cast nor can the future be foretold for a child born on the Moon, Mars, or Mercury. If life ever becomes possible in the future on the Moon, Mars, or any other planet, the rishi-munis and scientists of those places will have to start a shastra of this very kind completely from scratch and establish its principles.
The conclusion is that the knowledge of astrology, its formulas, its principles, and its calculations are exclusively for people born on Earth. It is not possible to cast a kundali or foretell the future for those born outside of it.
